Weapons, Phantom Edges, and reforging

Two main weapons, two secondary weapons, and a reforging system that gives your materials back. The design intent is obvious: experiment, and do not be punished for it.

Part of this page comes from preview coverage of a build that is not final. Anything marked Preview is rewritten once the retail build is playable.

The short answer. More than 30 main blades, each with its own moveset, and more than 20 Phantom Edges used for special attacks, crowd control, and unlocking routes. Reforging refunds materials, so building wide is cheap.

Confirmed 30+ primary weapons and 20+ Phantom Edges from the official description. The 25+ figure for Phantom Edges comes from the State of Play breakdown.

How movesets differ

Weapons are not damage skins. Length and weight change the moveset, so a light sword and a two-handed sabre are not the same combo at different speeds.

Two examples that illustrate the range, both from preview coverage:

  • A very heavy two-handed sword, found behind an optional boss, that trades speed for enormous single-hit damage.
  • A drunken-master style obtained from another boss, built around evasive last-moment dodges, a stagger that mimics intoxication, and a telekinetically thrown blade.

The relevant lesson is not the specific weapons - it is that when a boss keeps beating your preferred style, changing weapon is a legitimate answer rather than an admission that you are bad at the game.

Phantom Edges are also keys

Secondary weapons are not only combat tools. They gate routes: hammers smash weakened walls and floors, chains reach where a blade cannot, and some traversal options are tied to what you are carrying.

Coverage of the world structure describes roughly ten lock-and-key combinations shown so far. The practical consequence for exploration: a sealed-looking route is often waiting for a specific boss drop, not for a key item. If you are stuck on progress rather than on a fight, check what you have not beaten yet.

Reforging

Reforging lets you recover materials from gear you no longer use and put them into something new. Combined with accessories that modify a build, this makes the upgrade economy forgiving:

  • You are not locked into an early investment.
  • Testing a weapon properly costs time, not resources.
  • Upgrading wide is a valid strategy rather than a trap.

Build around a weapon, not a stat

There is a skill tree with active options - cancelling an attack into a quick dodge, for example - and passives that restore Sha-Chi faster. Those passives are quietly the most valuable thing on the tree, because they widen your margin for error in exactly the resource the whole combat system runs on.

A workable first-build rule:

  1. Pick a weapon whose recovery times you can live with, not the one with the best damage number.
  2. Take the Sha-Chi recovery passive before any damage node.
  3. Keep the second main slot filled with a weapon that covers your first weapon's worst matchup - usually reach or crowd control.
  4. Reforge rather than hoard. Materials sitting in an unused weapon are doing nothing.

Questions people actually ask

How many weapons are in Phantom Blade Zero?

More than 30 main weapons and more than 20 Phantom Edges, for 50+ total. Some coverage puts Phantom Edges at 25+.

Can you respec upgrades?

Reforging recovers materials from gear you no longer use and moves them into new gear, so experimentation is not permanently punished.

Do Phantom Edges do anything outside combat?

Yes. They double as traversal and route keys. Hammers break weakened structures, and some paths require a specific secondary weapon.
