Missables, locked routes, and the true ending

The game is generous about letting you go back - until, twice near the end, it is not. Most of the map survives post-story free-roam; failed side quests and two late gates do not. The disputed parts of the true-ending requirements are marked as disputed rather than smoothed over.

The short answer. Talk to every NPC, finish what they offer before you leave a region, and check the Journal after big story fights - failed Tales show up in red and stay failed. The map itself is forgiving: Bells give fast travel and the completed save reopens the world. What cannot be repaired later is a failed Tale, and the two gates described below.

The two points of no return

Both sit at the very end, and both warn you. The warnings matter more than any collectible list on this page.

1. The Serpent Door, before Mirage Estate

Mirage Estate - the final region - is entered through the Serpent Door at the Green Serpent House in Pangzhen. Three key items open it: the White Serpent Eye, the Black Serpent Fang, and the Red Serpent Tongue. Reported The White Serpent Eye drops from Heartpiercer at the White Serpent House in Meigu Lake; the other two come off the main path in the stretches before the door.

When you approach the door with True Ending questlines still open, the game warns you that you have unfinished business. Guides disagree on how hard the lock actually bites, so treat the warning as real: finish the purple-icon quests in section three before you go through. Reported

2. The Last Chance Bell, on Mount Soulrend

Near the end of Mount Soulrend stands The Last Chance Bell. Ringing it commits you to the final sequence - you finish an ending before the world reopens, and after the ending, free-roam returns for cleanup that is still possible. Reported

One nuance worth knowing before it spikes your blood pressure: the warning at the Bell appears even when everything required is already done. The warning alone is not proof that you missed something - check the Journal and your quest list, not your pulse. Reported

Before the final sequence, make a manual save. A completed run that missed a True Ending requirement can resume that save instead of starting over.

Side Tales that can fail permanently

Most side quests wait for you. A handful are on timers anchored to story bosses, and a failed Tale cannot be restarted by free-roam - it needs an earlier manual save or a new run. Reported The ones launch coverage agrees on:

Known Tale deadlines by region

Mandate EncampmentAfter defeating Wu Lengshuang, inspect the body in the flower fieldDefeating Yubi - or Secrets of the Baishan Sect fails

Reported Cross-checked across launch 100% checklists and guide hubs. The general rule covers anything this table misses: talk to everyone, check the Journal after every major boss, and keep manual saves at region boundaries.

Routes that stay locked on the first visit

A sealed-looking route almost never means you have failed to find a secret. It means the key is a boss drop or a quest reward one or two chapters ahead. Mark the spot and move on - the game does not reward brute force against a door it has not opened yet.

The Feather Bow deserves its own warning despite appearing in the table above: it is the only traversal tool with a quest deadline attached, because the archer camp can stay fogged past the point where its Tale fails. Pick it up in Weeping Creek Valley, not later. Reported

The true ending, as far as anyone agrees on it

There is a normal ending and a hidden true ending. The true ending awards the With Heart and Blood trophy on PS5 - that much is readable on the public trophy list today. Confirmed The route to it is described consistently as two purple-icon questlines that must be finished before the final sequence:

  • Secrets at the Heart of the Lake - the masks, the eyes, and the Hidden Realm ritual below.
  • Bloodline Awakening - all five Long Pillar challenges.

Launch checklists also list the wider purple-icon chain - Deep in the Valley, Illusion of Inanis, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity, Illusory Pipa, Pillars of Kunlun, Whence the Weeping, The Herald’s Illusion, Crimson Manor - as things to close out before Mirage Estate. Reported

The four Acolyte masks

Each mask comes from an optional boss called an Acolyte, with a scarecrow to check immediately after the fight. Reported

LightningLeitingPangzhen Backstreets
PoisonGuheAn island at Meigu Lake’s East Dock
IceHansuiCrimson Manor, below the Sha-Chi Tower in Weeping Creek Valley, fighting alongside the Puppet Scavenger

The Acolytes are optional, which is exactly why they get missed - none of them sits on the critical path.

The two Crystal Puppet Eyes - and where the guides disagree

The true ending needs both Crystal Puppet Eye [Yin] and [Yang], and here the sources genuinely conflict: one places the first eye on the Village of Lu chapter boss and the second in Crimson Manor; another puts [Yin] in the Mountain of Imprisonment stretch and [Yang] on the Crimson Manor hidden boss; a third credits the Puppet Scavenger and Hansui fight with [Yang]. Reported

The safe play, and the honest one: clear every boss in the Village of Lu, Mountain of Imprisonment, and Crimson Manor stretch, then check your key items for both eyes. We will not pick a winner between guides that contradict each other three days after launch.

The Hidden Realm

With all four masks, sail west across Meigu Lake and dock at the snowy shore - that is the Hidden Realm, also called the Mirror Realm. Beat its boss, then place both Crystal Puppet Eyes in the statue. Completing Secrets at the Heart of the Lake also requires all six of Firefly’s Memory Flowers in Village of Lu - the same set-based flower rule covered in the beginner guide. Reported

The five Long Pillars - two locations are disputed

The Long Pillars are Bloodline Awakening’s five challenge sites, and several are guarded by the Gold-Masked One, a hard optional fighter. Three locations are agreed on: Weeping Creek Valley, Crimson Forest, and Meigu Lake. The fourth and fifth are not: suggestions across guides include the Meigu Lake Hidden Realm, Crimson Manor, Mirage Estate, the Phantom Illusionist Ruins, and Pangzhen - with broad agreement that the fifth is only reachable in the late game. Reported

Why the pillar spread looks confused everywhere right now: the fifth needs Mirage Estate, so anyone writing before the late game was guessing with partial information. The exception to the Serpent Door panic: the last Long Pillar and Quick Hand Zhang’s final relic request can still be completed after Mirage Estate opens.

Quick Hand Zhang - required? Uncertain

Quick Hand Zhang runs a five-hideout relic request chain, with the final set in Mirage Estate; finishing it earns the Sha-Chi Blood Catalyst medicine. Whether the chain is mandatory for the true ending is explicitly uncertain even in guides that recommend doing it. Unconfirmed Treat it as a precaution: do it, but do not panic if you learn about it late.

After the ending

Resuming the completed save reopens the world for free-roam: Bells, Memory Flowers, Sha-Chi Amber Shards, Blackstone Shards, weapons, Phantom Edges, treasures, and the Long Pillars and other challenge sites can all still be cleaned up. What free-roam cannot restore is a Tale that already failed - that takes the manual save you made before the final sequence, or a new run. Reported

The PS5 trophy list flags seven trophies as missable - With Heart and Blood, Forbidden Arts Beneath the Lake, The Last of Baishan, Together Till the End, A Wanderer’s Honor, Spectral Blade, and The Healer’s Legacy - so a completion run should plan the true ending from the first region, not the last. Confirmed

What we still will not claim. How many endings the game has - no official count exists, and the eight-endings figure circulating is on the corrections page. Exactly where the fourth and fifth Long Pillars sit, exactly where each Crystal Puppet Eye drops, and whether Quick Hand Zhang is mandatory are all disputed or unverified. Anything not in the tables above is not sourced, and we are not inventing it.

Questions people actually ask

What is missable in Phantom Blade Zero?

Side Tales that fail after specific story bosses - failed Tales cannot be repaired in free-roam and need an earlier manual save or a new run. The map itself, including Bells, flowers, shards, and weapons, can be cleaned up after the ending.

Where are the points of no return?

Two: the Serpent Door into Mirage Estate, where the game warns about unfinished True Ending quests, and The Last Chance Bell on Mount Soulrend, which commits you to the final sequence. Both warn you first, and the Bell's warning appears even when nothing is actually missing.

What do I need for the true ending?

The purple-icon questlines - principally Secrets at the Heart of the Lake (four Acolyte masks, both Crystal Puppet Eyes, the Hidden Realm ritual) and Bloodline Awakening (all five Long Pillars) - finished before the final sequence. Exact drops for the eyes and the last two pillar locations are disputed between guides.

Is Quick Hand Zhang required for the true ending?

Uncertain. His five relic requests are widely recommended and reward a useful medicine, but no source states conclusively that the chain is mandatory. Treat it as a precaution.

Can you free-roam after beating the game?

Yes. The completed save reopens the world for everything except already-failed Tales.

How many endings are there?

No official count has been published. The often-repeated figure of eight has no source behind it - see the corrections page.
