Boss guide - demo

Huangxing, the Sunken Pillar of Kunlun

A pyramid-helmeted warrior with a flail on a chain. He is the boss that taught everyone watching the 2024 demo that this game has a grab you cannot survive.

Part of this page comes from preview coverage of a build that is not final. Anything marked Preview is rewritten once the retail build is playable.

The short answer. The flail is a range problem, the grab is a knowledge problem. Learn the grab tell first, then the fight becomes a spacing exercise.

The grab

This is the mechanic the fight is built around. A grab that kills outright changes the risk calculation for everything else: you cannot learn him by dying repeatedly to the same exchange, because one specific mistake ends the attempt rather than teaching you something.

So learn it deliberately. On your first two attempts, do not try to win - watch for the grab and nothing else. It has a distinct entry, and once you have seen it twice you will recognise it for the rest of the game's design language.

Do not try to parry it. A grab is not an attack in the sense the parry system answers. Dodging out of range is the response, and it needs to be early rather than frame-perfect, because the reach is longer than it looks.

The situational AI

Huangxing is described as assessing whether he has the advantage before picking a move. In practice, that means his behaviour changes when you are low on meter, out of position, or pressuring him at the wrong range.

What this rules out is a fixed script. Unlike a boss with a memorisable loop, he will punish an obvious pattern - which makes him the encounter where you should build the varied-string habit early.

How to beat him

  1. Fight at mid-range, not close. The flail's reach is the weapon; standing inside it does not help you, because the sweeps still connect.
  2. Move laterally, constantly. The chain arcs are wide but not fast to redirect. Walking in one direction is what gets you caught.
  3. Punish the flail's return, not its throw. The chain has to come back, and that is the recovery.
  4. Never stand still to heal or to think. He is built to punish the pause.
  5. Keep a dodge's worth of Sha-Chi in reserve at all times. If you need to dodge twice in a row, you want the second one to be available.

What he teaches the rest of the game

Huangxing is a good early lesson in a design principle that shows up everywhere later: the dangerous part of an enemy is usually not its damage, it is its reach combined with your own stillness. Every boss after him is easier if you internalise that movement is the defensive resource, and Sha-Chi is the emergency one.

Questions people actually ask

Does Huangxing have an instant-kill attack?

Yes. He has a signature grab that kills outright. It is a knowledge check rather than a timing test - dodge out of range rather than trying to parry it.

Can you parry Huangxing's grab?

No. Grabs are not answered by parrying. Dodge out of the flail's range instead.

What is Huangxing's title?

Huangxing, the Sunken Pillar of Kunlun. He headlined the Gamescom 2024 demo.
